LAOWAI SUNG 老外宋 SUNG NEW ROMAN

Designing typefaces is a transcultural and international process to me. Regarding the increasing level of global interconnectedness, typefaces can be considered a very fitting subject to explore cultural phenomenons on a global scale. Almost every script in the world has undergone borrowings and modifications, in terms of shape, usage, etymology, and semiotics. No question that also in China, the cultural and linguistic background has changed with time.

I regard the process of typeface design a chance to define what could be called a transcultural tradition. This process goes from calligraphy and hand lettering to digital typeface design, typography and a complex urban or social background, and emerges from the constant interaction between macro and micro aspects of design.

RomanType fonts are work in progress, Laowai Sung being the first one to be published for licensing.
